How do I determine if a company has gone out of business and filed for bankruptcy? How do I determine if a company has gone out of business and filed for bankruptcy?

I paid $8500 in the form of a bank draft to Canadian Discount Network for a membership in a travel service.  I was given 10 days to cancel and get my money back.

I canceled and was told to send my cancellation to Dtravellers Ltd.

I received a cheque from Dtravellers Ltd for $8500 post dated to January 1st, 2016.  On January 5th the cheque was deposited to my account and on January 6th the cheque WAS not paid as Dtravellers account was frozen.

I tried contacting Dtravellers.

There is a message on their system stating that the company has gone out of business and have filed for bankruptcy. Other source tells me the company has changed its name to CNB.

How do I determine if the company is truly out of business and has filed for bankruptcy or just changed their name?  How do I get my money back either way?

You can find out if the company went into bankruptcy or not, by contacting the Office of the Superintend of Bankruptcy
http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/icgc.nsf/eng/h_07026.html#from=Bankruptcy&pageid=E750-Hbr00000

You will be better able to determine if you can get your money back after learning the status of Canadian Discount Network.
